A Short History Of The WorldI was surprised to get this book in the post, as I had forgotten that Penguin also published non-fiction. Still, I had agreed to read it, so I started to read. And read, and read, and couldn't put it down.
A Short History of the World is exactly what it claims to be. The opening chapters of the book outline the early evolution of life on this planet, as well as the planet itself. What makes it remarkable is Orwell's tendency to comment on what he's writing. He observes at one point that those who indulge in racism shouldn't, because there is no difference biologically between any of the world's people. An unusual comment, given when he was writing.
The chapters are brief, which is a good thing. Any book that is as broad in scope as this must either be succinct, or overwhelmingly long. Fortunately for the reader Orwell choses brevity. He provides just enough detail on all his subjects to catch one's interest, but rather than bore you to tears he leaves you wanting a little bit more.
All in all, this is an excellent book to whet the appetite for more on any of his chosen areas; if it doesn't leave you wanting more, you will still go away from the book entertained and knowing more about the world we all live in.
Yes, I realized about 5 seconds after I'd hit submit that I was checking the author on the wrong book. And of course there's no way to edit a review once you've hit submit.
